BMI and body fat percentage are both used to assess whether someone is carrying a healthy amount of weight — but they measure very different things. Understanding the difference can help you interpret your health results more accurately.
What BMI Measures
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a ratio of your weight to your height. It does not actually measure body fat at all — it measures your total body weight relative to your height, regardless of what that weight is made of. Two people can have identical BMIs but completely different body compositions: one might be mostly muscle, the other mostly fat.
What Body Fat Percentage Measures
Body fat percentage is exactly what the name suggests — the percentage of your total body weight that is made up of fat. It distinguishes between fat mass and lean mass (muscle, bone, organs, water). This makes it a more direct and accurate measure of body composition than BMI.

The Problem With Relying Only on BMI
The classic example of BMI's limitation is professional athletes. A highly muscular rugby player or bodybuilder may have a BMI of 28 or 29 — technically "overweight" — but with a body fat percentage of just 12 to 15%, well within the athletic range. Their high BMI is due to muscle mass, not fat. BMI alone would classify them as overweight despite them being in excellent physical condition.
The opposite is also true. Someone can have a normal BMI but a high body fat percentage — sometimes called "skinny fat" or, more clinically, "normal weight obesity." These individuals look slim but carry excess visceral fat around their organs, which carries significant health risks.
How Body Fat Percentage Is Measured
- DEXA scan: The gold standard. Uses low-dose X-rays to distinguish bone, fat, and lean tissue. Highly accurate but expensive and requires specialist equipment.
- Hydrostatic weighing: Weighing underwater to calculate body density. Very accurate but not widely available.
- Bioelectrical impedance (BIA): Used in smart scales and gym machines. Sends a small electrical current through the body. Reasonably accurate when conditions are consistent, but affected by hydration levels.
- Skinfold callipers: A trained professional measures fat at several body points. Accurate when done correctly, inexpensive.
Which One Should You Use?
For most people, BMI is a perfectly adequate starting point. It is free, instant, and reasonably correlated with health risk across populations. Use it as a screening tool, not a verdict.
If you are very muscular, if your BMI and how you feel seem mismatched, or if you want a more detailed picture of your health, body fat percentage measurement — even from a smart scale — gives more useful information.
Ideally, use both: BMI as a quick, free reference point, and body fat percentage for a more nuanced understanding of your body composition.
